The End of Team Fluffy

Phlebas put up this notice on the
TLWiki page, it’s a picture of Sanae running away (at high speeds?) and what looks to be Akio chasing after her…

readme.txt from Tomoyo After. (also want to mention the hypocrisy of this idea that you can create illegal derivative works without permission, then stamp your feet at those who dare to create derivative works of your derivative without permission…)

(oh… and you have to agree to be 18+. Like a legal piece of document. I guess the teenage kids will just have to agree then.)

Anyway, the new Little Busters page is up on doki.co now. Very professional.

I think it’s more about professionalism at the loss of individualism which is the issue and how Doki try to “copyright” their work which in itself violates copyright laws.

Wow. I have to admit, this post caught me off guard. Having been a fan of Doki for years, and knowing Holo and a few other guys over there, im surprised you feel that way.
They are professional, they do things a certain way. That way may seem corporate, when it fact its not at all. And the 18+, well if the game has adult material, wheres the problem with that? Besides, its not like they “enforce” that at all.
In a way I feel like they have been compartmentalized. And to me, it just doesn’t feel like it exhibits the same individuality as before (it’s lost its fluffiness).
How do you mean? If you knew these guys, you’d know they were anything but corporate lol. There just fans who care about putting out these VN’s the best possible way, the fastest way possible.
I think it’s more about professionalism at the loss of individualism which is the issue and how Doki try to “copyright” their work which in itself violates copyright laws.
Are you talking about that readme.txt?
To me it looks like they really care. there not trying to “Copyright” anything.
Gee they make it sound like professionalism and legalities are bad things
I agree, whats wrong with Professionalism?
Why not make sure the legalities are taken care of?

I respect you feel the way you do, absolutely 100%. I just ask that you not judge Doki/Fluffy merger, until there is justification in doing so,
I ask you, keep an open mind.

Please know Aaeru, the above post was not meant as disrespect. I just hope you can keep an open mind regarding the merger. I believe wholeheartedly that this is a good thing that will benefit the VN community greatly.

No it’s okay, I actually like Doki a lot.
i think the post is not really so much judging Doki as it is ‘mourning’ the end of Fluffy, which was just my own take, a different take, on the the same story.

if you work under another, you lose your autonomy. you can’t control your public image anymore. you dont get to choose which image you want to use in updates. you can’t publish april’s fools jokes (it has to be approved by PR). and you can’t publicize your team’s twitter accounts http://twitter.com/#!/applehq/fluffy You can’t RP. because Doki is more corporate and less personal., which is no fault of Doki. im just saying that the fluffy label was more free and more independent in contrast, and I have a preference to people publicizing as people and not like company fronts.

I was just taking issue with the intellectual dishonesty of creating derivatives and then preventing derivatives.
The readme.txt file is emanating intellectual property mentality like nothing else. That is EULA-talk. You shall NOT, you shall NOT, you shall NOT.
and anyone who does not obey…… well, we get to stamp on you from moral upperground.

I just wanted to point out, where is this moral upperground?

and I dont understand why informal economies that function outside of law need to ‘take care of the legalities’. Or why it is even cool to pretend to be taking care of the legalities. Or even why you need to appear professional. In fact, they have more to gain from being human.

Well I had a chat with Clannad_man, he explains some of it. Basically the tomoyo after readme.txt was not written by him. and the reason why they have to throw up a front is largely because 4chan and the fansub cartels: (UTW, Commie, etc.) have been wanting Doki to fail for some time, and so they have to thwart the attacks on their image by putting up an aire of professionalism.

Anyway, i actually think that illegal fan translation and fansubs should stay clear of IP mentality (it’s poisonous) and just publish in creative commons. In fact, it is the only intellectually consistent way of doing it.

i wrote some of my thoughts on IP here (warning: long read)

Understood. And believe me I know the hate and stuff that Doki gets from the “fansub cartels” as you put it. 4chan is even worse. I guess that’s why I had to jump to Doki’s defense. Im tired of them getting undue criticism from those so-called “great” fansub groups.

Doki has been a huge supplier or great anime subs for me and my family for YEARS! Now they are going to provide us with great VN releases as well. I feel like its our duty as fans, to stick up for the groups that provide us with so much joy.

I had not really thought of the merger in the way you have. Interesting perspective you have. I had not really followed Fluffy much before about 6 months ago. I don’t have the invested time and interest that you do, maybe that’s why I’m not as bothered by this.

Well, hopefully everything will work out for the better. All we can do is be hopeful.

By the way, I read your article on IP. Great read.
