Shiravune has announced a Steam release for Utawarerumono: ZAN, an action game that adapts the second game in the Utawarerumono visual novel series, Mask of Deception. ZAN is a reimagining of the title, featuring an all-new, unique hack-and-slash combat system in lieu of the original visual novel’s tabletop RPG gameplay.
ZAN first saw a PlayStation 4 release in Japan in 2018, before receiving a localization by NISA for its PS4 release in the West, roughly a year later. Prior to this announcement, ZAN was unplayable on PCs due to its lack of a port.
With this announcement, it may potentially open the door for an official localization and PC release of ZAN‘s sequel, Utawarerumono: ZAN 2, which adapts the events of Mask of Truth, the sequel to Mask of Deception.
The Utawarerumono series is a trilogy of visual novels developed by AQUAPLUS, with the premise of each title centering on an amnesiac protagonist thrust into the tide of war and conflict as he learns to navigate his way around an unfamiliar, Ainu culture-inspired world. Additionally, the visual novel features tabletop RPG gameplay segments meant to simulate combat scenarios. A prequel in the form of an RPG, Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten, was also released in late 2022 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the series.
