From The Team: Hey there everyone! It’s me, Decay! Tay seems out of commission for the weekend so I took it upon myself to handle things this week. Sorry we’re a little late! It’s been a while since I did one of these by myself, and our setup is totally different from the last time. Here’s hoping I don’t break anything.

[wpdatatable id=311]The SeaBed announcement is pretty cool. I’m all for more yuri titles that aren’t your standard school-life fluffy romance. This one promises to have a deeper storyline that is a bit psychological. Apparently it was a pretty challenging read in Japanese, which is a real rarity when it comes to yuri. I’m glad to see Fruitbat Factory making good use of Conjueror, considering he’s one of the better translators in the scene.
Valve made some big waves the other day when they announced that this upcoming spring, Steam will be abandoning Greenlight in favor of “Steam Direct,” a service where you pay them a per-game fee, and your game goes on Steam, end of story. No voting process, no curation, nothing of the sort. The fee they haven’t settled on yet, but they’re thinking it will be in a range between $200 and $5,000. They also said it will be “recoupable,” but they haven’t elaborated on how. Even if it’s just a deposit, if it ends up being on the higher end, that could be a major obstacle for small time VN devs.
Opinions on the change are very mixed right now, with some people hopeful that a large fee could keep zero-effort game maker garbage off the store, and others nervous it could unnecessarily hinder indies. In practice, practically everything already got through Greenlight anyway. This looks like they’re making Steam even more open, but what they’re really doing is getting rid of the bizarre and archaic Greenlight system everyone had to wade through for no apparent reason. Meanwhile, the recoupable fee will be a large impediment that wasn’t previously there, potentially reducing the amount of games that will appear on Steam despite there being no vetting process anymore. I just hope that the VN scene won’t be impacted too heavily by this.
And thanks to everyone who gave me movie recommendations last week. I found some awesome films I wouldn’t have ever seen without you. I look forward to going through my now extensive backlog in the coming weeks. Maybe I’ll drop in some updates on what I especially liked and didn’t like, though I probably won’t do another movies-only post again. :p
See you all next week![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row css=”.vc_custom_1481952312185{border-right-width: 1px !important;border-bottom-width: 1px !important;border-left-width: 1px !important;border-left-color: #673ab8 !important;border-left-style: solid !important;border-right-color: #673ab8 !important;border-right-style: solid !important;border-bottom-color: #673ab8 !important;border-bottom-style: solid !important;border-radius: 1px !important;}”][vc_column][vc_column_text]TAYsteful Thoughts™Have a good week, everybody![/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
wait how is Dies Irae finished already? did Conjuerer actually TL it?
Dies irae has been in translation since early last year, actually. The Kickstarter was run when it was already mostly translated. The team also had multiple translators, Conjueror was one of them, but there was also ReadingSteiner and GundamAce.
ah cool, did they set a release date or anything yet?
They are trying to release it sometime in May, with the 18+ patch coming a few months later.
Nice, thanks for the info!
Seismic released a fully animated nukige call “Wolf Girl With You” at the end December. I never saw it on your list so I thought I would mention it here. http://www.dlsite.com/ecchi-eng/work/=/product_id/RE139061.html
Hey hey hey, more Yuri, too bad i have a dick, i would be so happy with a female replacement body for hitting on other chick. Lesbian’s love, lesbian’s life.
Hey guys, thanks for the hard work as usual. I’ve been thinking maybe you should add something like “misc” choice to “Our Current Picks:” section since Fruitbait Factory, Front Wing, Pqube, NISA, Visual Arts, Aksys, Degica etc. are becoming more and more active (incomparably more so than JAST)? Only having the old three pals and half-dead fan-tl seems like a waste.
That’s something we considered and may do in the future. I’ll bring it up again next time I get a chance. We need to update the current picks anyway.
Actually I categorized Miscellanous as Other in which comprised of company other than those usual three (Sekai, Mangagamer, and JAST) and fan translation. As for JAST matter, yeah I’m agree that right now JAST was currently the least active there. Not much I could said there.
Good to see Evangile is coming along nicely. Almost done now. I always appreciate MangaGamer updating us regularly, as well as SP.
There are still a few I been waiting for, like Angel Beats! Haven’t had an update about that in a long time. Hopefully its nearing completion?
Also, Little Busters! and Rewrite+ Ah, so many good VN’s to look forward to. 🙂
I backed Chrono Clock, so, I received the beta. Haven’t started playing it yet. But from what I have seen, its pretty good.
This week VNTS Review, and sorry for being late today. Interesting that we had some yuri updates for this week here, if I may said it myself.

Is it me or translation of Hatsukoi going absurdly fast? They started translation around 20th December and already reached %25. Also to my understanding proofread and tlc going at same pace with translation which means they are at %25 too. And you should also note that this is a long vn according to vndb (30-50 hours).
It’s not just you, they are moving almost suspiciously fast. I was planning on taking a look at the prologue patch they released soon.
Okay, let us know what you think about translation when you check it out.
It seems to basically be your standard fan translation. Part of the reason why the translation is going so quickly is probably due to sheer diligence, they seem to be working very hard on this. The other part is that they have a fairly literal translation style that favors speed over creativity. Expect to see plenty of “can’t be helped,” “to be expected,” etc, as well as other occasional unnatural phrasing. That said, it’s still probably better than a lot of other projects we track.
It it just matter of experience, and motivation.
I mean, most tls proceed in slow pace, like don’t even touching them for days/weeks/months. It is matter of having a will to tl everyday with few hours.
So, you should question – why others do it so slow, or even abandoned…
We’re a two man team that have worked on well known manga such as Nisekoi for over five years.
Our translator is native in both Japanese and English, and he sees translating as a hobby, which is why things are moving as fast as they are.
We’re probably gonna dedicate this week to polishing everything we have, so progress might be somewhat slower this week.
So is Yosuga no Sora dead?
This might be a dumb question, but are Mangagamer’s secret projects revealed when each one is complete, or when all are done?
They will probably reveal them at the summer expos where they have presentations.
I admit that I was hoping Greenlight would be changed, just so I wouldn’t have to continue going through hundreds of VR, RPGMaker, and pixel art games in my Steam queue that I had no interest in. But I can’t think of any way that Steam Direct will help visual novels. I think the barrier to entry will be too much for many companies to even consider.
