I don’t usually play old games, especially nukige. My apologies to the nukige lovers, I mean it with respect. Anyway, I discovered this on a blog post about old games that had been translated to English, but I can’t remember the link. Too bad!
It was a complete blind dive-in. I had no idea what it was about, it just looked interesting, so why not? And it was short, so I wasn’t too worried about getting disappointed in case I didn’t like it.
So, what is this about?
Pro Lesring: Ring Out!! follows Aya as she is forced into slavery by the Yakuza to pay off her family’s debt. Exploiting her for their own gain, she must now endure her challengers in the sport of pro-wrestling. Or should I say—Pro Lesring…?
Writing
The writing was definitely far from good. It was repetitive and lacked any real flow.
It takes literally 10 minutes for Aya enter the ring and gets naked with the other fighters. Although scenes go by in a breakneck fashion, they do little in progressing the overall story.
Ultimately, I wanted to see more from Aya and the other girls, instead of only having H-scenes. Cat is just my type, and I would have loved to go on little dates with her outside of the “wrestling” world. Mika is great too; I think the whole “Queen” persona would work for a nice gap moe if they developed her character more, with a lengthier game.
Plot
The whole concept is interesting enough, though it does read like 80s erotica. Checks out.
The wrestling aspect was pretty fun, especially when it influences the ending you get.
I like how in practice, the two characters represent the two sides of Aya: the sweet, meek Aya vs the depraved slut that she can become. It’s your typical Christian-girl-discovers-lust except Aya isn’t Christian (as far as I know)—and I love it! Seeing innocent girls embracing lust and sexuality is always a certain turn-on.
At first, it only seems as an old (but gold) nukige about lesbian sex and sexy wresting—and hey, it’s fine staying at that. However, there’s room to interpret it as a sort of coming of age for Aya in regards of her sexuality and feelings. It’s not the most natural circumstance to go through self-discovery, but hey, she did struggle with her attraction and at the end, decides to either embrace a loving side of it (in one ending) or give in to lust completely (the other endings)… It’s fun to see just how much Aya changes depending on your choices.
Characters
Aya—as a protagonist for this type of story—is the perfect fit. Not only is she naive and makes everything more sensual for it (if you’re into that, I mean!), but she can also switch sides as the story goes on. It only get sexier!
The whole “I’m enduring this for my parents” pretty much shapes her whole personality until we get more freedom to choose, before her pattern of though starts to change bit by bit. She never forgets of her parents, but she becomes comfortable thinking about the girls there.
My favorite character was by far Wildcat! She is just my type: sweet and warm, the whole ara-ara package.
Mika is a nice contrast to Wildcat and they pretty much offer different worlds for Aya to accept; a loving world in the ring, or giving in to lust. They have a sort of Good Cop, Bad Cop vibe.
Honestly, I think the H-scenes are a bit rough, and Mika’s especially. I found the content itself to be not too bad, though it contains certain fetishes (such as scat, sexual slavery and rape) that can be strong deal-breakers for some, and very understandably so.
Art & Soundtrack
The art is definitely the best aspect of this game, and definitely what drew me in. I can’t really point any flaws, if not for the H-scene factor. The girls themselves look fantastic, but the H-scenes with toys look painful, and the bad writing doesn’t help.
Overall, though, the art is the first thing I think of looking back on the game, so that says something about its quality.
The soundtrack is pretty fun to listen to but, as there is not much variety in tracks, it gets boring very fast. I wish we could have seen more tracks, but I guess it’s understandable for a game released in 1995.
Mechanics & Gameplay
I have to say, the route mechanics was the worst part for this game; that, and the save/load menu being a mess (to be expected from old games, I’ll admit). To see the different endings, I was forced to click through whole fights multiple times, which get tiresome after the first time. And since I didn’t have a guide, I had to guess what I had to do differently to get a different route.
That said, it wasn’t exactly obtuse to get to the different ending. In one playthrough, I decide to be more innocent, more gentle: I choose more loving responses to Cat, and I got her ending. If I decided to be colder to her, I get Mika’s route instead and then I either get ending 2 or ending 3, depending on later choices. Easy to guess, hard to sit through already-read text thrice in a row.
Final Thoughts
Ring Out!! is an easy recommendation for nukige readers. For some, the fetishes or the vintage art style may make this a pass for them, but for those who love these types of old games, it’s a very nice treat. I would even say it’s not a bad introduction choice for the subgenre, but I haven’t played many.
Overall, a 3/5 title for me—and this is not mid, mind you.
You’ll be able to finish all three endings in one afternoon, so give it a shot! I may have complained about the awful mechanics, but the art was so pretty to look at that I can overlook it for long enough to recommend this game.
I have already bought another ZyX release called Chain ~ The Lost Footprints and I am looking forward to playing it soon!
