Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. This week’s cover will be My Klutzy Cupid and Grisaia: Chronos Rebellion because we have thumbnail support by our highly capable Fujoneko today!
Finally, the July ended quite strongly with some anticipated titles and great updates on the fan translation side. There’s also some interesting Chinese titles that are extremely cheaply available on Steam. Usually the VNTS is just for Japanese titles, but bitch, we’re making the rules here, after all.
Today, there won’t only be Zakabox and Hatabox, but our programmer, Sirus, also will contribute a couple words. Mainly about the game he ended up playing, Amehazu. Maybe he’ll also find something else that’s interesting, but he’s a beginner so forgive him if he isn’t assimilated yet. In any case, he’s assimilated to our team and ready to write some amazing articles and handle programming work. We hope you enjoy the Sirusbox.

「Ladies, men of the gentle persuasion, Hata… and the rest of you miserable wretches, it is time for another Visual Novel Translation Status. Probably Hata didn’t name it “Thread” this time. We can always hope.
Let’s briefly discuss the mainline stuff so I can autistically obsess about obscure doujin visual novels and how their translations are looking crusty. First of all, Klutzy Cupid is that classic moege setup where the beta male protagonist has to hook up with someone or he’s dead or dickless or whatever. Classic. Understanding their audience, they also give the protagonist an in-universe guide to get into your chosen girl’s pants. I can’t be too mad, it’s not like I couldn’t have used one back in the day. It’s kind of funny how they make it some kind of Love Note where you write the name down though. I feel like there’s a contractual obligation to say the “Keikaku-doori” line at least once if you make use of it. TL NOTE: you already know what this means, nerd.
Haruka na Sora is the fandisc to Yosuga no Sora. You know, Yahiro actually sounds like an interesting character, though I wonder if the vndb description doesn’t spoil too much. One of my JOP friends read YnS recently and really hated Sora’s personality, which is kind of amusing when I swear everyone seems to be into the game for the main girl, but he really liked a different girl’s route. I wonder if I’d agree with him, but who knows. Seems like a good opportunity to put a hipster-approved waifu on your list…
Succubus Sessions is delayed, apparently not for the first time. The new date given is “August or September, 2023”. It was wise of them to specify the year, I could have memed them otherwise. Fuck…
From Madness with Love looks to have avoided the doujin curse, as the description is actually decently well written and the screenshots don’t look off. Playism may not be the best ever, but they can manage decent translations sometimes — though back in the day Fata Morgana ended up moving from Playism to MangaGamer and I feel like I heard Playism didn’t do a great job there. Honestly, who knows.
The Ise-shima case… damn, this looks hella retro. It’s not actually old though, just faking it. I guess the power of nostalgia is not to be underestimated. The translation actually looks solid based on the Steam screenshot, so if you like faux-retro adventure games this might be your thing.
Oh, and that Vtuber VN with Minato Aqua is getting a PC release with extra content. Aquarium has literally only high votes on vndb, but uhh… I can’t help but doubt how indicative they are of the work’s quality. You know how simps are. There’s no hint of a backport of the new fancier edition to console, so it might be that console gamers will be entirely cucked of this one. But hey, at least you can commiserate with your Japanese console-only brethren as they’re not getting the bonus content.
Unfortunately, here’s where we have to get a bit sadder in tone. See, we have two different VNs, and they’re both kind of just self-published, and the English kind of sucks.
First off, there’s Absent in the Rain, which isn’t too bad if you just look at the title of the Steam page. Unfortunately, the description is… clearly edited DeepL.
Now to be fair, many devs incomprehensibly decide to machine TL their Steam page description, not even asking their translator. This is beyond incomprehensible to me, but to the Nipponese mind folded 3000 times, I suppose it just makes sense to have the first damn thing people see about your game have shit ass text on it. I will say the image edits are kind of slick, if nothing else. The translation in the example screenshots looks kind of cringe as well:
Reading through the Steam posts, it looks like this translation was done by a translator that translated them asking to localize the game. It’s kind of unclear to me if she got paid or not, and I wonder if we should see this as a kind of ascended fan translation. It definitely looks like one. I can’t be too harsh on that, I guess, it’s a free VN after all.
Lies as a Starting Point has much the same issue with the description. Finding the actual Japanese description used proved kind of annoying, but it’s in this youtube video description. You can also see what’s written in the Campfire page for the project — Campfire is a Kickstarter analogue focused on Japan, though this project used a feature more common to Indiegogo where the creator gets the funds even if it doesn’t hit the goal. In fact, the goal was 500’000 yen and they only got 150’000. That said, the creator promised to deliver on the reward tiers even if the goal wasn’t reached. It looks like a product has emerged from the whole thing, so maybe it worked? I don’t know if I’d ever back a crowdfunding project that did this kind of thing, it’s so weird.
Anyway, the description actually looks kind of rewritten, though maybe it’s just that the Japanese Steam description was changed. Unfortunately it’s not really rewritten in particularly normal english, so RIP. The screenshots shown literally have a grammatical error of “Its” for “It’s” in them, apart from rather amateur literalish translations. It’s all so tiresome… Oh well.
I do like that indie devs are getting translations out there, it’s just kind of sad that they end up like this. I guess it could be worse. But it could sure be better. I don’t know if they could even reasonably afford better. Maybe not. All I know is it hurts my soul. And I guess that’s how I’ll have to end it. Bit of a downer this week.」
The Hatabox
「Finally, another actually exciting Visual Novel Translation Thread! I was already losing hope since VNDB didn’t show too many new cool things happening in the near future, but for some reason we’re in a (porn adjacent) industry that has no clue how to properly tease. Which is why we have a lot of shadow drops and sudden releases no one’s prepared for. Whether this is good or bad, may be your personal decision.
Well, let’s first shill our breakthrough post which managed to crack a yet unprecedented level of exposure of our Twi… X-Account to the VN scene. One night I had the amazing idea to just recycle the popular Tangled meme template with a new Lycoreco 2 promotional poster and then told our social media guy Grayest to add the caption: “Which Visual Novel opinion will warrant this reaction?“. After he posted this, I went to bed and the next day I attended CosDay, a German anime convention in my town Frankfurt am Main. Just as I took a step into the venue and connected it to the WiFi, my phone was immediately assaulted by hundreds upon hundreds of notifications because that post had exploded. Seeing a lot of people discuss under this post is such a great feeling. It also made the viewcount of most of out articles spike greatly. This could’ve been the breakthrough post Fuwa needed. It went up more than the Katawa Shoujo ReEngineered announcement, and it keeps growing!
First, I’m going to talk about My Klutzy Cupid, the newest license by Nekonyan and HIKARI FIELD. I have already heard among members of our team that the common route of the game is extremely short (like three hours long) but the character routes are so incredibly adorable that it makes up for the lack in overarching story. The premise is weird and for some reason, as players read what the game is about, the word “NOTE” immediately primes them to call this game the “Moege Death Note“. I couldn’t think of a more unfitting description for this, because Death Note is clearly a battle of wits type of story which I’d rather see compared to G-Senjou no Maou or Akatsuki no Goei. Just because there’s two elements that are central to a particular medium, it doesn’t mean you can simplify it like that. Moege lovers will love Klutzy Cupid as the klutzy archetype (dojikko) has always been popular in those. If you want to play other games like it check out Slobbish Dragon Princess Series or the comedy gold Ditzy Demons are in Love with Me.
Next, there is Grisaia: Chronos Rebellion that came out on the 27th of July 2023 in English. Frankly, I never touched a Grisaia game (with the exception of one of the ChiruChiru Michiru Spin-off games) because the sheer size and the amount of different titles is so daunting. There are 3 main parts (Kajitsu, Rakuen and Meikyuu), then the Grisaia no Senritsu & Zankou, 9! parts of Grisaia Phantom Trigger and now a Gacha turned PC game, Grisaia: Chronos Rebellion. I know that these games have some of the best translations, being handled by Koestl among others, but I’m still not going to play them, unless I have nothing else to explore. I respect their size, though.
Shiravune is shaping up to release a doting succubus Mama game by Argonauts, but at the current date it has been delayed for a second time. This time, we will not get it until later in the year. I have an idea what might have happened there, but don’t think I can elaborate. Maybe these things I’m thinking about aren’t related at all, so this is conjecture.
Among releases that week, Queen of the Otaku: THERE CAN ONLY BE ONE came out. I learned about this title, because my fellow website overlord Nook had already a Shiravune sanctioned review out a week early. Well, it has a petite girl and a booby older one, people will definitely jump on the petite one more. Also she’s that Mesugaki type. Again, people will sure love her.
In White Album I’m not particularily interested in. It’ll be amazing if the second game appears with an official translation though. Maybe even an upscale in graphics?
Usually, there’s not much to say about Nukige by Cherry Kiss Games, but I felt like applauding for this amazing name they chose: Super Smash Gals: Ultimate Orgy. This game will release on the 28th and it’ll probably have to do next to nothing with Smash Bros. Just another example of Dörg coming up with amazing names. Will probably put Cava on it, who finally got rid of his SHADOWBAN!
This new Shinyuden game, Retro Mystery Club Vol.1: The Ise-Shima Case will be amazing. I already enjoyed games like the Famicom Detective Remakes and I also played a bit of A Shijima Centennial Case before. I just love these Mystery Games and now there’s one with super retro graphics that look like from old consoles or education manga? Sign me the fuck up.
Now I’d like to mention a serious interlude before closing on the big title announcement by fans. Apparently, some absolute buffoon tried to rip off a fan translation created by means of live-translation on Stream. The one being ripped off, was Lemnisca’s head, J.Hooper, known for his work on several projects such as Iwaihime, parts of Dies Irae and Root Double. In his pastime, he often live streamed himself playing Japanese untranslated visual novels, interpreting them for the audience. (I personally have watched him do an entire playthrough of Killer Queen before.)
Apparently, someone was trying to rip off his live-translation of 12Riven. We couldn’t find an archived post of the thread on GBATemp, but it has since been deleted. However, the damage had already been done, since in a kneejerk reaction, J.Hooper privated all his translation stream VODs. Unless someone had downloaded them, those are now (withheld) lost media. What a terrible turn of events, but deservedly so.
Lastly, I want to mention the Tsui no Sora: Remake fan translation that was announced on 20.7, the Tsui no Sora Day. We have written an entire post dedicated to this. Consider checking it out. The Vuparian review of the infamous Tsui no Sora OVA, too.
Okay, that’s everything. I now have to cool my totally not fried Brain. During the last weeks, all I’ve been doing was look at bright screens and manage what I could in the Visual Novel World. This is how I will be spending my days until the end of the year. Afterwards I might take a month of break, but then I’m positive that Fuwanovel and all its members have profited from all these efforts significantly.
Sirus doesn’t feel like posting, so maybe next week. Instead, he’s going to prepare his Amehazu (JP Version) review as well as a super helpful tutorial for Japanese readers that still needs some cooking before it is ready.」
Glory to Fuwanovel.

What I can say about Tsui no Sora is that I’ll just wait and see seeing that the last time we have the translation project of it was failed. Also turned out that Shiravune localized Succubus Session 2 was supposed to be the secret, although they keep the page open for about a week before delete it (Might have something with Steam on now they must keep the secret of it and delayed the first part release).
Oh yes, here’s my belated VNTS Review for this week, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
