Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold.
Another week, another VNTS is waiting for us. The last week was full of interesting developments, but what sticked out most was how familiar and friendly our discord server has become for everyone. We are bringing together different breeds of people and while there can be conflicts and crude humor, none of them feel unresolvable. Another big plus is that when you have a question about Fuwanovel or game development, you can expect an answer in no-time. Not many other places provide helpful feedback this readily. We have a proper dev space now. Next it has to look like one.
A big event happening this month is Spooktober VN DevJam, which boasts 210+ submissions of which we’re going to cover … ALL OF TH…*gets shot by Sirus*… A lot of them. This will probably be our main content in October, but we’ll see what other reviews we can get out. We’re nearing 4 months without a drop in daily content. I’m still impressed that this works so well.
Well, without further ado. Let’s get into VNTS. We’re looking forward to five releases today!

「Back on the grind, eh… I’ve been writing these consistently for a shocking amount of time, I have to say. Some are better than others, but they’re all there on Tuesday. Except the one time I missed it, but that one did come out on like, Thursday! So here I am, slaving away in front of the white screen, forced to acquire opinions on all I see. Some of them might even be good.
Fate/Extra CCC is in testing. That felt quick. I guess they had their insertion properly organized. Nice if so.
Rabbit Heart is another Shinzou Translations es/en translation of a Quantize VN. After quite a few doujin vns like Rabbit Heart, they’re now looking to translate the substantially longer Sousaku Kanojo no Ren’ai Koushiki as their next title. I wish them luck on the grind. We have a dedicated post for Rabbit Heart as well.
Yuuwaku is yet another boomerge, this time on the FM Towns platform. Someone made a launch trailer for the patch. Crazy. You know, the old porn art in these often seems to be better constructed than more recent moe art, maybe because the higher proximity to realism making anatomical oddities more obvious even with the clothes on. Unfortunately, most of it is just unfappable for me when looking through the imagesets, as it does not depict the gushing cum I have come to love in more recent ero depictions. Often there’s not really any variations to speak of, just one CG. I wish we could get the best of both worlds at some point. I’ve seen enough comically swollen labia to last a lifetime…
Both of JAST’s upcoming BLge from PIL/SLASH are in QA. /jp/ VNTS tends to be a bit late on updates to JAST Blue projects, so I’m not sure how long this state has already continued, but eh. Looking at PIL/SLASH VNs on gaijin-locked (I have to turn on my free VPN to browse it ree) Japanese Eroge database Erogamescape, Paradise is tied for 3rd highest rated at 75 (but with 6 votes total) while Masquerade is the 2nd highest at 80 with 18 votes. The highest is of course the holy grail, Shingakkou, at 85. You can understand why the brand would want to offer the less notable titles first, and they’re not exactly just found on the ground outside — they’re some of the highest rated titles (on EGS, admittedly; not the most BL-centric site). But we all want to see the cool one done. I’ve heard it might be worth reading for a general audience, even. Maybe it’ll be sales dependent… Girls do seem to buy things a lot, so that might help here.
Secret Agent of the Knight Academy is just Secret Agent on all the store pages, so I wonder where VNTS got the title from. It’s certainly more descriptive of what happens in it. This is one of few ensemble games where the protagonist isn’t crossdressing, but of course he still has something to hide — he’s a ninja pirate zombie robot secret agent. Honestly, I think I prefer the crossdressing. It’s so pog when the protagonist is voiced, and they kind of have to whenever he’s got the girl clothes on. That said, idk if anyone thinks this one is very interesting. Likely the premise is mostly whatever. Moege moment.
Tsui no Stella‘s official translation is out. I saw someone say this might be the first time we get a proper translation of a romeoge, but god knows if they actually did a proper comparison. I hope they’re right though. God knows we’re overdue after the 3 Cross Channel fails. Though Cross Channel might be significantly harder than this, given all the damned now-boomer otaku references.
You know, “Hamefura” might not be what you call… uhh let me copy this over… My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!, but I rarely hear localized titles in my circles. Even when I actually scrolled twitter to see anime takes some years ago, I knew of bokumachi but not Erased, leading to a funny moment on this one podcast where I realize the one is actually the other. I probably just exist in the perfect intersection to not see the localized titles, since I don’t actually watch anime I just see opinions on it. Though for Hamefura, I mostly just know it because a woman I know from a Japanese learning server was reading the LNs… Anyway, there’s a Hamefura spinoff VN loc coming out on November 28th. I hear the original LNs aren’t very romantically focused, but maybe this spinoff aims to change that.
MAMIYA -DoomsDay Dreams-, to be the second and final part of the MAMIYA series, is set to release simultaneously in English and Japanese on November 21st. Fruitbat Factory is handling this one, which always gives me pause since I don’t know if they have a single loc with actually good English writing in it (I’m mostly annoyed by the Seabed loc’s turgid prose, though), but I guess any loc company gives me pause so shrug. The first in the series is a rare No Romance Plot tag on vndb, with a post-apocalyptic setting. Watch them ruin it for the romancehaters when they all hook up in part 2. Honestly they’re a pretty underserved demographic though, so good luck to them.
What is ANGEL WHISPER? The localized title adds The Suspense Visual Novel Left Behind by a Game Creator. It looks like it’s been picked up and reworked by a different writer since then, and now they’ve released it on the Switch. So the vndb page for this is interesting because it also lists a planned PC version, but only in JP. However, the only real evidence is the promo video saying the planned targets are “Switch, Steam” — the official homepage only lists the Switch as platforms. I don’t know what to trust, but it would be weird to not get the translation into the Steam version as well, so if it is coming there, it’ll probably be in English too. We’ll see. It looks like this is a title with meta elements, where you’re investigating a game your parent left behind many years ago… the original ANGEL WHISPER was released in 1999, so that would be the innermost layer to the metafictional cake. Good luck solving the “mystery they left behind” if you try it.
Finally, Zarie: The Story of Sin is the first release by doujin group MOON USAGI, which seems to be a Japanese native that also produced the VN’s English localization. Both languages have released simultaneously on Steam. The English in the Steam screenshots doesn’t look perfect, but it’s also not MTL tier. I guess it’s better than average in this kind of situation. One textbox I see has significantly less information than its Japanese counterpart, though maybe they split it into two? Or it’s just the author deciding to cut some fat so the Americans in the audience don’t get even more spherical. Brevity is the soul of wit, after all… Sorry, I’m european and we have to make these semi-jokes every so often or we literally disintegrate into our constituent atoms. Anyway, I have a lovely Fazer Salty Toffee Crunch1 chocolate bar to get to… See you soon.」
1. I swear watching too many FutureCanoe videos has ruined me. What kind of madman thinks crunch is an erotic adjective? And yet the salty in there is enough to make me mentally replay that clip he uses of Bieber giggling, over and over. It’s over boys… good videos tho.

1 braincell strategic thinking 4 braincells social graces 1000 braincells osu 24569032 braincells random shit I thought about just now
「Ok, so if I take a look at the above recipe for how my cortex works according to Zaka, I have to concede it might be quite accurate. My strategic thinking is usually replaced by the pretense of strategic thinking and planning, then throwing the plan aboard once it looks like the results would show too slowly. That’s why I’m often instantly engaging with an idea I just cooked up. My failure rate is non-zero, so those might be some avoidable blunders caused by such concoction of brain fluids. Also Zaka actually dared to conflate my love for the osu! with my love for Nanahira and this deeply offends me since I love Nanahira (not gonna post the copypasta now.)
Fuwanovel is going super smooth lately and while I’m definitely avoiding the sun in favor of chatting on our discord server far too much, I don’t feel bad about it in the slightest. However, due to our dedication to get 2-3 articles out of the door per day, my personal work day at Fuwa exceeds acceptable Geneva rights standards. I will be so glad when things smoothen up soon with the new website and database. Wait? New website? More on that in another post soon.
Other than the new website plan, we also have seven VTubers on staff now with three already being revealed. Honestly, it is maybe time to finally close the applications because we have easily three full offices full of highly skilled people now at Fuwa. It’s mind-boggling how running such a volunteer force is even feasible when other websites already had to close down because they couldn’t consistently handle three employees. Hypersocialism is key to make this work.
Now, let’s get into the VNTS content:
After we praised the progress with Fate/Extra CCC last week, the group made another leap forward and finished the whole editing process now. I remember that I was searching on Twitter’s awful search system (which George Hotz was supposed to fix) but couldn’t find the posted announcement for about two hours. Extremely wasted time and I still feel mad about it. The game Fate/Extra CCC will be releasing soonish. TYPE-MOON fan translators are usually not the ones to let things slack once they picked up momentum.
To make the perfect transition, some French TYPE-MOON fans have ported ye olde Tsukihime into the Web browser and gave it so many features that it could replace the old work with a new definitive edition. This is the epitome of overdelivering and there’s now another thing the French can be proud of. Did you know that some parts of the SciADV group Committee of Zero are French as well? Now you do!
Rabbit Heart is another game by ->Quantize_ semi-legally localized through Shinzou Translations. We reported about it, but I’m absolutely sceptical whether they can transition from short and sweet doujinshi games without big stakes into the translation process required for a hugely important title like Sousaku Kanojo no Ren’Ai Koushiki. I think I read they’re going for a Spanish translation only? If Alexeir is more proficient in Spanish translation then this could be a good decision, actually.
We have some oldge (or as Zaka would say Boomerge) on our hands. And this time it is not only Yuuwaku for the FM-Towns System, but also the coveted Dragon Knight II for the PC98. I actually have not touched the Dragon Knight games before, but my friend and business partner Tyrosyn held panels at Dokomi where those games found mention. In particular, there is the funny trivia that there is a German Dub of Dragon Knight III (Knights of Xentar) that sounds as great and soulful as you expect it. In any way, the DKII translation here is MTL but the creator says they checked every line. This is usually a red flag, but let’s be real… The amount of people who are even willing to engage with PC98 fan translation projects is so limited, that you can’t be picky. After all, they are doing highly historically important things here. It’s eroge archeology if that makes sense.
MangaGamer started pre-orders for their Nightmare x Vampire – Inferno of Retribution game and that’s all I know about it. It’s a game from eroge company Guilty and part of a series they started localizing a couple years ago. I’m not sure if I will get it, but maybe our boy Cava will review it. We should definitely cover it, I literally forgot about that.
Zaka already talked enough about JAST BLUE and their shenanigans about Masquerade: Hell Academy and Paradise, so we can leave it at that. However, I would like to emphasize that our denpa_archivist has posted a painfully hilarious blog about his experience acquiring the Slow Damage physical the proper way. It took a year.
Nekonyan released Secret Agent or “Secret Agent of the Knight Academy“. If I’m honest, I’m not stoked for this title because our boy Nook came out with a review that rates it with 5. 5, in words “five” is actually much worse than anything I would give to a title looking like this. I don’t know if I’m just a bad rater, but if a game can already present great artwork it already fills the 5 rating for me.
(But, let me go on a tangent here, rating systems are actually so bad and people use them terribly. On MAL there is usually a word attached to a rating and 9 would require the media to be GREAT. I don’t know many anime I would rate as GREAT but I definitely have to retract my opinion on some of the titles I have rated GREAT so far. If you guys ever want to see my heavily outdated My Anime List you can do it here. Please don’t leave me a hate comment over Madoka. I will rewatch it and retract my terrible ass opinion one day. I feel ashamed for most of the nonsense I posted there.)
Okay, let’s get to the end with ANGEL WHISPER. This game, I know not much about, except that someone had contacted us on Twitter/X to write about this game since it went under the radar for everyone. Well, the news for this game is only in Japanese and as long we don’t get one of our Japanese capable staff to have a free time frame, it will be something left with me or Zaka. Mamekujira is still quite the new publisher, but they’re not unknown at this point since they launched with a remake of Ningyou no Kizuato, a pretty vintage title with some following.
Zarie: The Story of Sin looks pretty amazing. Got not much more to say about that. Sirus will love it.
Okay, time for another week of awesomeness! Stay awesome y’all!」

If that screenshot of Tsui no Stella is from the official translation, then I know which translation to go for.
Sigh, some translators/editors and readers might get quite a bit kick out of it, but there are definitely people here exist that don’t want to see onii-chan (and its variants) being translated as dude or broski and translation choices like that.
I looked at to screenshot again, and it says “Jude”, not “dude”. I got triggered for no reason, and I can’t even delete my embarrassing previous comment :(.
I must admit that in my eyes, the fact that you’d pick the translation to read of a Japanese writer known for their good prose purely based on the honorific localization strategy is much more embarrassing than the mixup.
My preference isn’t purely based on the honorific localization strategy. For instance, I hate translations like “Sankaku Ren’ai” or “Nukitashi”. In other words, if you were to translate “onii-chan” as “big bro” or “name of that person”, I wouldn’t have much of an issue with that translation. However, translating it as “dude”, yeah… Gives me quite a good idea about translators/editors styles and preferences.
The whole dude thing was actually picked in bad faith. Arunaru really didn’t like translating a Moege like SukiSuki (where Dude actually stems from) and thus he didn’t really care about any otaku sensibilities or catering terminology. Basically, MG just assigned the wrong game to the wrong person who let their emotions run wild.
https://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sr1tu4
I personally don’t mind localization if it has a purpose and isn’t done to spite the audience or “get back at the chuds.” I separate what the community tends to dub “localization crimes” with more nuanced takes into “necessary localization” and “memelations”. People tend to get angry at memelations and it’s often justified.
(However, games that are already quirky in JP like Sankaku Ren’Ai, Nukitashi [read my articles on why this was an unfortunate circumstance] and Lamunation where such more funkier localizations are expected can still work as memelations.)
TLDR: Sometimes loc staff wants to show off their quirky humor, but it isn’t really that funny. Does it ruin the entire experience so much that you need to drop the game or not pick it up at all? Not really.
It’s interesting if not funny on how sometimes eyes can misdirecting us with said misdirecting can lead into the discussion on how bad a certain translation choice it is, and let’s just leave it at that.
Anyway for this week, the interesting updates is obviously Mangagamer’s updates and of course Secret Agent release. Shiravune also has several release date announcements, and with it now we know on how they arrange all planned Q4 release with the remaining one are Amazing Grace (Probably as their Christmas release because it fit thematically wise) and Kuroinu 2.
Lastly here’s my VNTS Review for this week, and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
