Visual Novel Translation Status (18/09/22)

Welcome to the Fuwanovel VNTS, where we shamelessly copy the work of one illustrious 4chan /jp/ member in collating translation progress and add minor dabs of value through corrections and additions. Entries with updates this week in bold. This week’s picture is from Houkago Cinderella because we pay some respects to a fallen brother whose translation project will never make it beyond the finish line because it got DMCA’d. This is not the first time this actually happened so it is not quite as surprising as people may think.

Hi, welcome to the fourth iteration of the Fuwanovel VNTS since the Kraut nation invaded and took the grassy lands they want to cultivate. Here’s Hata again and this time I will be doing the second portion again, since it was truly not worth it to pick up some (fan) industry specialist for a week as slow and dreary as this. Next to the sad information mentioned earlier, there are still like two translation projects worth mentioning and even something entirely new!

Without further ado, this time we will actually use our boxed space to be talking about some interesting additional things that happened in the community we’re building up again. Old people who haven’t been making content for a while suddenly came back to produce new one and Zaka took a detour into GVNL (German-(created) Visual Novel Lalaland) so that is pretty special in itself! Ah, and the cursive usage in the copy-pasta part will cease and desist. It is too much work for too little benefit. Also Zako does not let my unbridled autism roam! (I have him under control lads, definitely no issues eyes gleam dully in despair no issues at all… this week I’m leaving his italics unmolested for his commentary section just so you can see how often he uses them -Z)

The Zakabox

「Yawn. There are technically things here that matter, but none I care about. Anyway, let’s get them over with so I can ramble about things I actually do care about on Discord or whatever.

First, Houkago Cinderella got a C&D from Nekonyan, and thus the guy is stopping the project. This is somewhat expected, and I think I even heard it’s even in NN’s contract with (some of?) their partners that they have to do this. No guarantees this means they’ll pick it up anytime soon, but they are partnered with the dev, so who knows? Man, we need a moege enthusiast on these so that someone will care when this kind of thing happens. Ahem.

While there isn’t much reason to oppose NN here given they do a decent job, I do want to remind everyone that if you maintain proper operational security, you can just ignore a C&D and keep your project up. Without the kind of effort I doubt many companies would go to, the worst they can do is take your blog or whatever down. For this and many other reasons, I recommend that everyone, and especially anyone interested in fan translation, maintain pseudonymity on the Internet. And if you’re a German site owner… I’m sorry for you, Impressum moment I guess. (No, Zaka. We don’t recommend doing this. -H)

Kimi ga Nozomu Muv-Luv is some kind of kgne/muvluv spinoff I guess. Most of it was done by Âge fan (and member of the official tl team for Muv-Luv, but then scorned for the KGNE translation because he dared demand a decent rate, or so I hear) Evan as a fan translation, but a little extra was added by a new team.

Koukan no Toriko-tachi is a Waffle nukige, which really only makes me wonder about one thing: Waffle, why the heck do you always use such a small font size for your games? Is it supposed to provide some kind of comedic contrast to the size of the dicks and boobs in your games? I don’t get it. Actually, I upped the font size on discord to 20pt the other day and it feels a lot better, honestly. Though I still use 80% UI scale on a high DPI screen…

One thing we had to manually add to this VNTS is that ports with English translations for the Japanese-mythology-steeped yurige Akai Ito and Aoishiro got announced recently. Aoishiro has a fan translation, though it’s a bit jank. Akai Ito… had a very jank website-only translation that I’m not sure who was even using it. Having read the Aoishiro translation that handled things fairly literally, some parts are going to be tricky to translate no matter your approach given that kanji radicals and Japanese etymology get mentioned quite a bit and is backstory-relevant at times.

Lastly, a few cool links mostly taken from Hata’s energetic Twitter work:

The Last Secret, a surprisingly fun free EVN I’ve been reading recently. I have my complaints about how hard it is to hit character routes to 100% it, but it’s well worth playing if you like your VNs on the nerdier side (Go problems! Explaining how some infinities are bigger than others! Feynman! Stanislav Petrov! Ahem.) Website here.

Lesiak on cool free EVNs he read recently

The VNture Podcast has a Fuwanovel thread now

A VN-ish dev project that was posted on our forums ages ago is complete and it looks kind of sick.

And finally, solidbatman’s thread on Gnosia, the social deduction game in VN form

Alright, that’s all from me this week. Maybe next week will be less soporific.」

The Hatabox

「*absentmindedly keeps typing in already translated game text into a spreadsheet*… O-Oh, I did not notice that Zaka was already done! I should have expected so, because the week was truly quite empty when it came to new announcements and exciting big things. Most of the time I actually spent hanging around on Fuwan0vel’s twitter interacting with everything and everyone and eventually bringing us across the 7000 Followers mark there. Thanks for all the support we’ve been given in the short time we returned. The analytics are quite good, not going to lie.

But this is not what you are all here for, so let’s get to the meat of this thread: The translation updates!

The first important thing I want to talk about is actually something that I should stay vague about. I involved myself in a translation project for a game which we cannot name yet. Right now, my job is simply to type in stuff from recorded english video files for some of the Love Interest’s Routes. People who hang around in other communities might now know what I’m talking about, but here I’m going to refrain from naming its title — to keep it a secret to everyone. Either way, this project is quite fun and while it is not the optimal way to read this game, I’ve gotten quite invested in its story. You can be sure however that this translation project will not appeal to the general userbase who like visual novels. For fans it is still going to be really popular when it is eventually done – I tell you. Sometimes all it takes is a simple e-mail.

Next, we have to talk about the surprise announcement of the Aoi Shiro & Akai Ito double-pack for multiple systems including PC which got announced at Tokyo Game Show 2022. Frankly, every year I keep ignoring this event, but this year I decided to actually check out some of the streams. My verdict: It’s all too much. If you already thought GamesCom or PAX are big events, then Tokyo Game Show with its literally 470 companies will completely overwhelm you. I was already scouring the internet for one huge Megathread that contains every announcement, but even the big websites like IGN  only name the super hype titles. I was planning to do a comprehensive article on the Fuwanovel forum, but that would take much much longer than I am ready to invest. I got other things to do.

Either way, Akai Ito & Aoishiro are both beloved Yuri titles with a mystery setting and some well-aged content, so it is refreshing they are getting HD Remasters on modern consoles and PC supporting multiple languages including English! The originals have been released in English as fan translation and the Akai Ito one probably wasn’t inserted back in the day because you really need to get your reverse engineering skills in check if you’re able to modify PS2 content readily. Later, it still happened. Anyways, both are yuri games that line up with such cool titles such as Curse of Kudan or The Expression Amrilato or other yuri games with a mystery setting.

Zaka evidently has not too much interest in the KGNE fandisc that was released recently, otherwise he would have picked up on some information that someone close to our staff clarified. Apparently, the fandisc Kimi ga Nozomu Muv-Luv contains two stories of which the second – Melvina Maniax –  one got completely translated from scratch by the new team.

Haruuru actually gets occasional updates by Ittaku on Fuwanovel. The last one said that once they put in the text and were ready to prepare a patch, it unfortunately started acting up and some display bugs appeared. It can only take a little more time, we pray.」

Tangent: How is Fuwanovel doing?

Well, here we arrive at the end of this weeks coverage, but I still feel like typing more so let’s talk a bit about the state of Fuwanovel right now. The last weeks were very turbulent and we started having so many new and old members join the forum. While everything looks good, content is produced and we occasionally peak at 20 users at the same time, there are some issues I still see with how it is going:

1. We don’t really have a direction yet and it will probably take a while to get one going. While we are producing blog articles, posts and also this VNTS quite diligently, there is no real direction that we have decided on yet. As you already noticed we are pushing quite a bit of EVN’s, Otome, BL and other communities that only rarely get their representation on other platforms across our social media. This is simply because we want Fuwanovel to be a place for everyone. The general JVN market can already stand on its own. Whenever we retweet something via our social media agents from the big account, people are really thankful and even somewhat honored that we notice them – in fact, all we do is interact on twitter. However, people being thankful and actually expressing gratitude for something is sparcely seen in the JVN scene lately so it is worth to give back to them and allow them to spread their own fandoms in our inclusive community. But this does not mean we will replace coverage of one with the other, after all.

2. How to communicate Fuwanovel’s revival to the others? Thankfully, due to the big article that ricedigital had written — based on the big announcement post that we made on the Visual-Novel.info Discord — a lot of new people found the forums and started signing up for it. Unfortunately, the nature of Discord and how people are using it makes it impossible to get the word around to everyone because people mute @everyone pings the moment they have gotten pinged for something they consider unimportant making them essentially a dead server member. Following up such behaviour it makes it likely that they forget the existence of the server completely and never get the memo. But to our fortune, a lot of people seem to resonate with the general idea that Fuwanovel is breathing air again, may it be nostalgia or healthy curiosity. When I’m doing my typical pitch to represent VN.Info, Fuwanovel and what we do on social media, the amount of negative reactions I was faced with are still in the one-digits.

3. Fuwanovel Forums are extremely chaotic and they will probably receive a rehaul of sorts. If you checked out the FanTL section as well as the creative- and original projects corners you will notice that those have been slowly getting cleaned up. However, there are still sososo many posts left which need some possible cleanup. This honestly will require a lot of effort by the moderation team or some of the active members to be reporting old ass threads. The old Fuwa-team had the policy to not be closing threads at all and we would like to keep this up — except for threads that are completely solved. A bit of order would be necessary however, so don’t be surprised if some areas look emptier and you have to use the search feature more to find some articles in particular.

4. We need partners and volunteers to be contributing new walkthroughs. The walkthroughs on Fuwanovel had been its life-support during the 6 years where this place was only sporadically used by people who stumbled across the core community here. This led obviously to the fact that we are currently 6 years behind current releases. You will not find any modern guides for Iwaihime, Muramasa or Majikoi (updated with modern terminologies from the official translation) here yet. This has to change.

We already got somewhat of a permission by NekoNyan (yeah, they’re doing good and bad things equally) to be using the guides that Nekonyan’s Editor Chuee (happy birthday today btw) posts on Steam. Route Guides mostly contain the same content, but they need to be formatted in a particular way to be used and legitimately count to Fuwanovel’s  “Formatted Walkthroughs” section. Right now, this area of the forum is completely messy and needs to be refurbished, mainly by us, friendly users or we might reach out to specific fandom communities to submit a guide that agrees with their personal quality standard. This is probably the best solution.

Okay, this is everything I desired to say and bring into the open. I definitely plan to consult the community about some discussion-worthy changes to Fuwanovel, so you can help us finding a direction that everyone can be happy with. I would be infinitely grateful if you recommended Fuwanovel to your friends and made them undust their accounts. We can reach the greatness of yonder times again, together.

This week VNTS Review from mine, and it’s obviously too bad seeing Houkago Cinderella got C&D seeing that Tsukishi here is quite cute. Oh well.

https://forums.fuwanovel.net/blogs/entry/3662-cinderella-of-the-red-castle-review/

Anyway looking forward to the eventual release of Aoishiro and Akai Ito duology even though I know that some (If not most) people would branded the former as redundant because we already have Aoishiro translation patch released in 13 years ago.
